By the balls, the frozen balls

Dilaram and I went out of town this weekend to say goodby to a good friend who is moving to Portland. When we got back yesterday afternoon it was frigid in the downstairs part of our house. I thought this was odd since the heat was actually on 65, much higher than the thermostat upstairs. I know heat rises so I just turned it up to 70 and commenced cleaning. Because I was moving around I didn't realize how chilly it truly was becoming with the sun setting until I went upstairs and it felt toasty. So I went in the basement to check on things and lo! the furnace that heats the first floor is not even on. I tried everything and it just won't turn on. It's cold and now all my plants are starting to look real unhappy. Of course this happens when it's below freezing weather, not last week when it was almost 70 for a few days.
When I called the gas company phone number that was on my furnace they informed me that they won't even come look at it until I pay the balance of my bill.
*Background Info* We received a gas bill for December for $550 dollars! A guy from the gas company came out on Jan 4th and read the meter which is inside.. So I called them back and asked that they come read it again. They realized they screwed up majorly at some point and our bill for January ended up being $94. How does that work, how do you go from 550 to 94. It's not like it's been really warm for the past few months. I think something is still wrong. ANYWAY, regardless, we haven't paid our whole balance and I know we need to get on budget billing. I'm just so irate at this point that if we didn't have a gas dryer and oven I would let them shut us down and buy some fucking space heaters.
The upside to the furnace not working? I guess my gas bill will go down...ha, it better.

Amb-o, have you checked the pilot light?

To me, $94 seems like it would make about half of your bill for a winter month. That's how much I paid to heat my apartment from novermber 15 to december 15. I do actually USE the furnace though. I don't set my basement on 65. 65 would be much LOWER than I would ever set my thermostat. That's FREEZING!

I know, but I obviously can't afford 550 a month every month. I have looked over the furnaces and the instructions say there is no pilot light, that they light themselves and NEVER to try to light them. I wish I could keep it at 70. Our bills before december were between 130-200, and then BOOM 550 for December, so I guess it kinda evened out with the 94 for January, but something seems quite amiss. It just makes me sick, and sometimes literally when I have to live in coldness, everyone complains about it. Next year I'll pay more for electric and have a little heater in every room that people use. Fuck Laclede gas, I hate them.

I'd agree that there is definately something wrong going from $550 to $94. My December bill for a 3 bedroom duplex was $172 (with the temp set at 68) & $112 for January. I bet they missread in Dec & the Jan bill is reflecting the correction.

Stupid furnace. It's running but it needs a motor replaced that's 500 dollars. At least it's going, for now. Ah, heat and off work early, the day has just improved.

you didn't have President's day off? man, what kind of science museum do you work in?

So you need a NEW furnace, PLUS pay $550? I think you should call them and tell them to stick that $550 up their azzes. tell them you will only pay $94 for December, and $94 for January. Be like that guy you posted about!

p.s. A-ron - i agree. I only like to go as low as 68 as well. Unfortunately i live with a new roomie who likes to scrimp on money, and a boyfriend who is constantly in the state of 'sauna' who likes it to be at 61. the freak.
i am constantly in the state of 'it's too feken cold in this house'.
Too bad i'm out numbered.

Yeah, when you guys own your own homes you'll feel differently. Yep, the furnace repairs have nothing to do with gas service. I have to have a machine that can heat WITH gas. It sucks. I'm telling you houses are such a burden. But sometimes it's worth it.

About as much of a burden as renting...especially when your dishwasher is broken, but you can't call in the landlord to fix it until you get the pets out that she said "Absolutely No" to....Ahhhhh the joys of broken appliances.

Glad to hear you have heat now. Stuff like that always seems to break at the most inopportune times.

Yes, it's still working. The big difference with owning and renting is that you can call the landlord and they have to pay for repairs like that.

Wow Amb-o.

I don't expect this comment to ever make it to be published.

Why did you remove those two posts?

Because it was hateful and not worth carrying on. I don't want to have a blog of hate, that's not why I'm here.
